Hi,
A goal without a plan is just a wish. It is clear to me; we have dreams or wishes but don’t always act upon them. We live our life within save boundaries provided by our employers and coming from our usual habits. But if we would do what we really love to do most, we are capable of doing great things. So let’s find out what we really want. We than have a goal, and let’s develop a plan to support us to achieve it. We can also call such a plan a road map. It will provide you a huge potential of learning and personal development, as a minimum. It will make the place where we want to be in about five years visible but also achievable.
It is key to know what you really want in life as well as understanding what your professional capabilities are before you set these goals. In addition a sense of reality cannot be missed. Personally I love to play soccer. I’m fifty-three years old and I have enjoyed life a bit too much to set a goal for myself to become a professional football player. It’s not realistic and as it wasn’t in the past as I suffered from less talents then those from competitors. So I had to look further for a realistic position and suiting my capabilities.
To my sincere believe the most of us people want to contribute and be important to others, including our employers. If you do what you love to do most its almost a given that you will provide added value, recognized by people surrounding us, aspiring us to accelerate. So finding out what makes us really happy in life should be a first priority. Although it may be easy to ask yourself this question, answering could be very difficult. Ask yourself the right open questions and answer them honestly, without fear, self-doubt and fully coming from you.
When your faith becomes stronger than your fears, then your dreams can become a reality!
So as soon as we know where we want to be, or what we love to do most, we can define a first draft of a plan or road map. If it is for your career you may call it your career plan. The route towards your goals will become clear, but obstacles as well. We will all meet obstacles; so don’t be afraid to make them transparent. We can pass them, or take them away during our journey. We need courage, confidence and lets get rid of self doubt.
Imagine a well educated person in economics is aspiring a leadership role at a financial organization. He or she is having the capabilities and would really love to go to such a role. However speaking in public feels very uncomfortable. At home a concern is addressed regarding work life balance. Last but not least it looks current leaders are doing their job very well, and receiving credits for it on the workfloor. That are three obstacles.
- Fear – speaking in public would mean stepping out of a comfort zone.
- Doubt – Influences with positive intentions coming from family and friends may have an impact. They would not like you to get hurt.
- Self-Doubt – mirroring may result in thinking things like I could not achieve that.
We need courage to overcome these obstacles, and confidence about our capabilities and that we really want to achieve our goals. If you have the courage to step out of your comfort zone and speak in public you will grow and will find out that every next time will be less difficult. I remember the first time, not knowing where to look, even shaking a bit. With confidence we can have fruitful discussions with the ones we love and ask for support achieving your goals and also finding a happy life at work. Self-Doubt is a common pitfall for many people, although this is not necessary. If you know what you love to do most and your capabilities you can achieve it. Just follow the plan. If the plan seems to be infeasible, change the plan, but not the goal!
“When your faith becomes stronger than your fears, then your dreams can become a reality!”
An important element in faith is self-confidence. To my view it is a mix of character and demonstrated capabilities and competences. Faith in general may be influenced or impacted by uncertainties.
As a summary I believe Job Coaching can help with all of this. It helps you to have a challenged and herewith convinced goal, a SMART defined road map, and faith stronger then your fears to go for it.
If you could get the courage to begin, you have the courage to succeed. – David Viscott
